Photographic frontispiece. Nine further plates throughout, four of which are folding. Light shelf wear, shading to prelims, pages a little toned and thumbed but clean. Overall very good condition. 164 + iii pp. Clayworth Church contains, among other interesting relics, a Rector's Book, which was commenced in 1676 by the Rev. Wm. Sampson. It was entered with great care and regularity during his Incumbency, which continued through the reigns of Charles II, James II, William and Mary, until the Accession of Queen Anne. It chronicles the leading national events of this time, but its chief interest lies in the vivid picture it gives of the manners and customs which prevailed in this part of rural England at the end of the 17th Century. Much attention is paid to the state of the weather, the value and condition of the crops, and the manner of tithing them. The book does not take the place of the Church Register (which dates from 1545) but is supplementary to it. An intriguing and rare book, with no copies on the market, no recorded appearances at auction, and just 3 copies recorded in institutions. From the Library of Professor Alan Rogers.
