W.M. Jacob focuses upon the clergy of the established Church in England and Wales as a professional group, and investigates their role from 1680 to 1840 with a focus on parish clergy. Examines social background, professions, finances, worship practises, pastoral care, and expectations and reactions. This book effectively challenges the received view that the majority of the clergy were inappropriately educated, poverty-stricken, and inattentive to their canonical duties. Condition is as follows. Cover is very good with slight lifting to edges and very minor bumping to extremities of spine. Underneath lie black cloth boards with gold gilt titling to spine; foot of spine a little bumped. Internals pristine. Overall, a very clean edition of this title and a great read for those interested in the religious aspect of the 'long eighteenth century'.
