First Edition. Hardback. Bound in half black leather with marble paper covered boards. The binding is rubbed and worn with some loss, the front and rear boards are detached with a large piece missing to the spine. Previous owner's pencil notation to the front paste down. There is a closed tear to pages 263 to 266 and these two pages are loose. The rest of the pages are toned with foxing to the prelims and very occasionally throughout. Illustrated with eight stunning chromolithographs. pp. xii + 388. Overall a fair but scarce copy. William Dalton is best known for being the first to publish an account of the first Englishman in Japan's travels.
