Rare second edition. Cloth in red with aged patina 'mottle effect' and gilt 'King of Clubs' embossed on the front. Extra triple-ruled border to both front and rear as well as gilt title to the spine. All edges of the text block gilded. Fifty illustrations by John Tenniel including brilliant frontispiece of the 'White Knight' portected by tisssue guard. Mild foxing otherwise pages clean, intact. Internal cracking. Original supplement for children included - a charming A13 booklet written by Carroll 'for every child who loves Alice'. Split to the side of the spine cloth, rear board slightly lose. Neat inscription dated 1877 and second name. pp.223. A fair copy overall with beautiful illustrations and a worn look.
