First edition, signed. Rare. Front board pictorial, white cloth binding. Tipped in neat inscription by Sackville-West written at Sissinghurst and dated 1932. Minor toning to front free endpaper. Frontispiece of John Frederick Sackville protected by tissue guard. Pages with hardly any foxing. A Foreword by Vita introduces her personal ‘sketches of Knole’ with acknowledgements. Also provided for the reader’s ease are a Knole chronology and Sackville genealogy dating back to William the Conqueror. Knole is Vita’s childhood paradise which she described as 'not an incongruity like Blenheim or Chatsworth, foreign to the spirit of England... the great Palladian houses of the 18th century are in England, they are not of England'. This book also bridges Woolf’s great novel Orlando in which Woolf in superlative style allows Vita to ‘finally’ own Knole, a transgression of patriarchal history. pp.xvi+230. Very Good overall. Essential Bloomsbury Group literature.
