This lovely hardback limited edition Franklin Library copy of Langston Hughes' "Laughing to Keep from Crying" and "25 Jesse Semple Stories" is beautifully bound in dark green leather. The book is opulently decorated, with all-edge gilt, as well as gilt decorations, lettering, and illustrations on the cover and its spine with raised bands. This impeccable presentation continues inside the book, which has lovely deep olive green silk endpapers, a satin ribbon page marker, and a playful use of green and black ink for chapter titles and other interior decorations. Chris Duke's stunning illustrations and the lovely photography provided by Raoul Abdul, a longtime friend of Mr Hughes, helps to ground the literature within the important context of the Harlem Renaissance, of which Langston Hughes was a significant contributer. This book has 269 pages of text, despite some minor fading to the silk endpapers, the interior is in near perfect condition, and appears unread. This book is looking for a new home, and would be a lovely gift for any collectors of limited edition Franklin Library books, any enthusiasts of modern US social history, or for any fans of Langston Hughes.
